Rap/hiphop videos are very popular in todays society. There are a number of artists out there that are very popular such as... kanye west, nicki minaj, snoop dog and big sean
narrative,- story (calvin harris) concept -specific idea - , real
Rap/hiphop Conventions - Women are portrayed as a sexual object towards the men, you would normally see them dancing in the background and have some shots at the women's backside and legs..A typical rap/hip-hop music video would include features such as money which shows wealth in the artist making them and influence. Luxurious cars and big houses used in the setting framed to also show wealth. it is also a way of boasting about their possessions. It shows masculinity. You can also usually see the artists holding alcohol or doing illegal things indicating the fact that they are breaking the law and thinking that they are above the law.
Crowds...
In hip hop music videos crowds are usually used. They are mostly seen in the background dancing or bouncing their arms up and down in time of the beat to the song. This gives them a role play and participation within the song as if they are dancing to the song. This could demonstrate their liking to the song. I think that it also gives credibility to the song and artist because it shows people in the background who actually like the song which in a way could make other people like the song as well.
Example
Camera shots....
Typical camera shots for a hip hop music video would be the low angle shots and close up shots, these are generally used to imply the artist's power over their audience. I think that the low angle shots used to give the artist power because they are looking down at the audience. The close ups show the artists facial expressions as well as emotion but also as a way of selling the artist for example..
-In the ms.Jackson music video a low angle shot is used showing him and his dog.
-In the video of ignition a low angle is used
-In the music video my name is there is also a low angle shot used.
-In the music video of Because i Got high a low angle was also used.
Example
In hip hop videos artist collaborate with other artists from other genres because audiences like this kind of thing.
Mise en scene...
Colours of clothing can be bright in a music video, this is an indication of the positive mood.
Chains, watches, hats, snapbacks, t-shirts can all be used to sell merchandise from and artist but can also set trends for the audience, this can make them more money because of the audience liking the artist and also the products that they have so that the audience can relate to them.
examples - In da club and ms jackson
Theres lots of references
Expensive jewellery is warn in
Our Alcohol shot - these shots usually contain expensive alcohol drinks
it is used to ow the artists wealth. These alcohol drinks are usually very expensive, they can be seen pouring it away like its useless indicating that its nothing and that they could buy more easily with out it effecting their finance.
The money shot - this shot shows the artists wealth within the music video, the artist can be seen flashing bundles of cash and waving it at the cameras and also throwing on the floor like its nothing.
This shot is the 'girl' shot. This shot was used to show that the artists have/get female attention.
It usually involves woman dressed half naked with a lack of clothing to their body whilst doing provovative/sexual dancing throughout the video. You acctually dont usually see their face at all.
This is the group shot, it is a shot used by artists to show that they have a connections with their friends and are a part of a 'squad' or 'gang'.
The graffiti shot is used to link back to the artists back in the 'hood' or to reinforce a message that is being contiuously shown throughout the video. An example of this is in the wu tanag clans - C.R.E.A.M. The title of the song is shown as graffiti on a wall.
Lupe Fiasco - Kick Push
This video we used for our inspiration. The skaters in the background of different shots are doing tricks and skills. We thought that we would try and do some of these shots in our music video.
These are the images that inspire us.
Jimmy Johnson - Sun goes down
This video inspires us for the black and white editing used to create and effect. The beams of cars make it effective in away and also the fact that the people in the video use 'mise en scene'. The clothing they use is all black and white
